Getting and paying for mental health care

Free NHS talking therapies you can refer yourself to, private options, and what to do in a crisis.

This is general guidance for England. It is not about any one provider, and it is not medical, legal or financial advice. Every statement below comes from the official pages listed under “Official guidance”, checked on 4 October 2026.

Paying for mental health care

NHS
Free. You can refer yourself to NHS talking therapies without seeing a GP; other NHS mental health services usually need a referral.
Private
Self-pay or private medical insurance. Ask about the cost of assessment, each session and any medication.

In a crisis, call 111 and choose the mental health option, or 999 if a life is at risk.

Getting help with your mental health

For many problems, such as anxiety and depression, you can refer yourself to NHS talking therapies without speaking to a GP.
Who can use it
You need to be registered with a GP and aged 18 or over (16 or over in some areas). It is free on the NHS.
